German (Hugo in 3 months) Book & CD ReviewThis marks the revision of the Hugo German in 3 Months course issued along with audio CDs. Improvements include dialogues which are more current and a reasonably paced introduction to German grammar. This isn't a course that is directed to someone wanting to learn "tourist" German but it is not designed for that. But I couldn't give it more than 3 stars for two really annoying (and unnecessary)problems with this course. First, the authors got very lazy and the vocabulary in the back just lists the infinitive form of the verb, with no way of knowing if the verb is irregular or what the irregular forms might be. Are you supposed to leaf through the 272 page text to find the verb form? This is unforgivable. No serious German course makes this glaring omission. Secondly, the authors have jargonized some of the grammar explanations so you find yourself being faced with terms that I have never seen anywhere else. Passive voice in all other texts becomes the "obverse process" in this one. How about the "prepresent", "direct object case" or the "indirect object case". Then there's the "prepast" and the "oblique past tense". Why can't they just use the normal grammatical terms used everywhere else instead of introducing more unnecessary jargon?German (Hugo in 3 months) Book & CD Overview
