Faserland ReviewFaserland is a social commentary on the materialistic and superficial nature of society today, of "Pop Culture" and of Generation X. While the book takes place in Germany and touches on many elements of internal problems that the country has, and continues to deal with (i.e. its Nazi history, etc.), most of the overarching themes are applicable to the people of any nation today.
Through the actions of his wealthy Protagonist, who displays elitist and arrogant qualities but is simultaneously self conscious and completely dependent on monetary and tangible wealth to sustain him, Kracht draws attention to the misguided and often perverted values that are so pertinent in today's world. The unfortunate selfishness and extremities of the protagonist seem so exaggerated that they could be perceived as unrealistic, yet we all display those same characteristics on a daily basis, in a lesser, but no less excusable form.
Some of the topics covered are materialism, the lack of responsibility for our fellow human beings, a culture of apathy, and the ever too frequent focus on that which is tangible, temporary, and irrelevant, rather than lasting, fulfilling, and valuable to society.
While the book is not a masterpiece, it is a very interesting social commentary and makes many good points about our ways of life - as nations and as individuals. It serves as a basis for self critique as well, if the reader takes the time to engage with the text. Highly recommended.Faserland Overview
