Auflage Mit Einem Vorwort Von Rudolf Smend (de Gruyter Studienbuch) (German Edition) ReviewThis rather late work of Wellhausen's builds on his earlier contributions and sets up his well-argued thesis of a fundamental divergence of "Jewish history" from pre-exilic "Israelite history." This thesis is now largely discredited, but Wellhausen's writing and his arguments are stimulating even today. It is especially intriguing to place his arguments in the context of his time (late 19th and early 20th century) when Wilhelminian nationalism bloomed and the term antisemitism had just been coined, and to be antisemitic was, in Wellhausen's circles, a badge of honor. It is amazing how Wellhausen discusses the early Israelite history without recourse to Jewish contemporaries such as Graetz and Geiger. It is instructive to think in what subtle, and to some degree probably unintended, ways Wellhausen's arguments induced German theologians of the generations following him to buy into the Nazis' antisemitism. Thus, if critically read, this book can be a rich source for discussion. The book requires excellent knowledge of German.
