Der Pilger Kamanita (German Edition) ReviewA sad shame that this Nobel laurate is by and by largely forgotten, at least except in Germany where he always found the greatest acceptance, also when he was alive.In his native Denmark he was far too visionary and far too much into the spiritual to get much recognition. Specially at the time when most writers heed the call of George Brandes for a secular and problem debating literature. And admittedly Gjellerup's production is somewhat uneven, often dragged down by his negative view on sexually active and attractive women. (Most probably his own marriage was 'platonic').
But his novels about Buddhism could certainly deserve to be wide read classics, also for people into new age and today's wide embracing spirituality. 'The Pilgrim Kaminita' might be his finest hour, a brilliant story encompassing aeons of time, and one of the best attempts ever in Western literature to depict the after death state. A book that gor favorable review from the great Hermann Hesse and no doubt served as an inspiration for his famous Siddhartha
