Elliott Erwitt's New York ReviewErwitt is well known for capturing that chance shot that turns out to be a classic and some in this NYC selection bear this out. The 105 photos (plus a page with sixteen portraits) reveal the bustle and quiet moments in the city. Nearly all have people in the frame on any average day from 1946 to 2001. Some are really standout photos with subject matter and compositions that grab you but I found that overall there aren't too many of these and some unfortunately don't really warrant a second look.
There is a problem though with the book's format that doesn't do the photos any favors, so three stars. The fourteen inch deep pages have most of the images bleeding off the edge so this means that where there are two on a spread a thick white margin is used in the book's center to stop the photos butting into each other. There are twenty-six full spread images which makes them very grainy because of the huge enlargement (very much like the 1995 reissue and redesign of William Klein's famous 1956 New York photo book). All this is rather thrown into focus because there are twenty-four spreads with one photo a page and generous margins as one would expect in a quality art photo book. If only all the pages had photos with margins it would have enhanced the work no end. I understand that the publisher's have another same size Erwitt book ('Personal best') that has the same awkward format problem as this one. The design suggests one of those city tourist photo titles sold at airport bookshops.

'New York' had its moments for me but I was expecting more and certainly a more sympathetic presentation. Andreas Feininger's New York in the Forties has 162 photos and despite being some decades ago really does a much better job of capturing the beat of the city from Coney Island to the Rockefeller Center.
