Atemschaukel ReviewI read this book in German because my father was a slave laborer in the Ukraine after the second world war and never really talked about it. A few remarks here and there, about digging turnips out of frozen ground to survive. I think he was building a hospital somewhere near Kiev, and as a builder in Toronto I was forced to act as his laborer over many summers when I was in my teens. It was not slave labor. I worked hard, and sometimes unwillingly but really I loved the outdoor work. I didn't get to know him much better during this time, and went on to my own career. Now many years later, there are many questions I would have liked to have asked. Apparently so would Herta Muller. Her mother was forced to work for war reparation in a slave labor camp (the word "camp" seems so very innappropriate! - the German word Lager has a stronger connotation of something for prisoners of war [not beer] --- prison would be a better term.) Herta Mueller interviewed many people about their experiences in this slave labor setting but then focused on one, a Danube Shwowe Rumanian who was a writer and poet. Together they created the poetry in this astonishing novel. They focused on the intense hunger of the five years in the work prison, and called it a hunger angel, perhaps because its voracious, omnipresent demands kept them alive. They focused on the power of words - "you will come back again" his grandmother says as he leaves in military escort - and it becomes his byword throughout the SkinAndBones ordeal. The poetic metaphors throughout are staggeringly evocative and real. This book resounds the sound of honesty and truth. It is neither heroic nor brutal, but very personal. I can't wait until it is translated into english; and I hope the translation does it justice. For me it was very personal and transfigurative. I don'[t think I understand my dad any better for it, but my memories have been enormously enriched. I can't thank Herta Muller enough for carrying this project forth.Atemschaukel Overview
