Nietzsche's Theory of Knowledge (Monographien und Texte zur Nietzsche-Forschung) ReviewWhen reading this book it feels as if the author has released a laser beam onto Friedrich Nietzsche's convoluted, enigmatic, poetically meandering philosophy and brought into clear daylight one of its most essential but often neglected elements, namely, how we can know what we know about anything (not 'Reality' or 'Truth'!).The author brings out time and time again and from all possible angles and perspectives Nietzsche's view of the ways in which knowledge is ultimately based on criteria which are not and never can be be universal. The only universal truth for humans among humans can only be that there can never be a universal truth for all humans.
In fact, this whole book could be explained as one magnificent exercise in begging the question (like Nietzsche's work itself): to accept the premise of knowledge beginning and ending with 'will to power' (in its quality as 'being') as the basis for all our different perspective interpretations of reality, ultimately, Nietzsche's theory of knowledge explains nothing but that there is only...will to power, which ultimately can't be explained, because it is 'just' a postulate to uphold a 'system'. But this view would be unfair. Nietzsche's view on knowledge does offer a real alternative to other systems like indeed for example Kant's, in which there also(!) is a built-in, basic axiomatic 'uncertainty principle' in relation to knowledge about reality. Namely, Kant leaves from the postulate that any object can be known or explained in t w o ways: as 'thing in itself' or 'transcendental object' and as 'appearance' (which we interact with in our daily lives), whereby Kant maintains that the ultimate truth about the 'things in themselves' can never be known - one must simply believe(!) that they exist. But this premisse is a false one, in Nietzsche's view, because ultimately with Kant it comes down to b e l i e v i n g that the 'things in themselves' which cannot be known to us are out there somewhere (like God).
Nietzsche rejects this distinction in maintaining that our perception of objects is the result of one single process, namely that our perspectival interpretations (of anything) are not o f something or a b o u t something, but that the activity of interpretation and the object are identical.
But the basis remains Nietzsche's denial of other philosopical systems' ultimate claims to the truth, contrasted to his own ideas about how we a r r i v e (a process!) at our vision of 'truth' and 'reality'. And it is to the great credit of Ruediger Grimm that in this broad but wonderfully clear discourse, with many quotes from Nietzsche, he here combines before us all of the ideas - scattered throughout all of Nietzsche's works - that support Nietzsche's theory of knowledge in a well structured and nicely convincing argument. And while Nietzsche's view that all knowing is perspectival interpretation could lead to "despair over ultimate instability or meaninglessness of the world, we must", according to the author, "embrace Nietzsche's position in a positive manner, as a challenge to continually create and recreate a more satisfactory reality for ourselves." "But", as the author goes on, "how many or what type of individuals would be capable of embracing this position and using it creatively (rather than passively and uncritically accepting a conventional world view) must remain an open question." (p196)
