Durch Wüste und Harem (German Edition) ReviewKarl May was an eccentric adventure novelist from Germany. In the states he is known a bit more for his tales concerning the North American Old West. However he also wrote many adventures in taking place in the Middle East. This is but one of them, and my first introduction to this author. I have learned that he had an influence on Robert E Howard, the creator of Conan the Barbarian, and that makes sense. This novel is a classic of the Adventure novel genre.The story line is more or less nothing much more than Kara Ben Nemsi Effendi's travels from Tripoli in North Africa "Through the Desert" ending up finally in Kurdistan. Along the way he has many different adventures, is put on trial for murder, rescues a Greek Girl from being a sex slave in a Harem. (Nothing explicit in this part of the story, it is safe for the bright young man who reads German, would not even rate Pg 13) Kills a lion, is held hostage etc. He visits Mecca, and meets other fascinating characters, archeologists and such.
I found the religious debate and dialogue to be absolutely fascinating. Of course the author being from Saxony was Lutheran (Christian),if but nominally as some commentators have accused.I have to say though that I was impressed in many cases as he argues for the reliability of the Bible over and above that of the Koran, and has his main character not only remain a Christian, but argues for the validity of the Christian faith. I wasn't expecting that to be part of the narrative. I can't say that I agreed with all his points, but I did agree with many of them.
The German was not insurmountable to one who has an intermediate level of comprehension. If you have a son or daughter in high school who has taken a couple years of German and would like to tackle a fun German reading project for the summer, this is it. He/she may need a pocket dictionary to help him here and there, but shouldn't need to pick it up too much.Durch Wüste und Harem (German Edition) Overview
