Der letzte Zeuge ReviewLike a lot of people who lived through the Nazi years in Germany, Rochus Misch has a very selective memory.
I read this book for a project I am working on. The book itself is nicely put together, with the centerfold being a color diagram of the two bunkers beneath the Reich Chancellery, showing the rooms where Adolf Hitler lived and worked before he died. The book is in German.
Mr. Misch tells of his being orphaned, his childhood, training to be a commercial artist and being drafted into the military. In those days, people could get a civil service job after military service. He is wounded while in Poland and spent some time convalescing before returning to Berlin.
He was chosen for work in the Reich Chancellery for a number of reasons, he was wounded, he was the last son in his family, he had good manners, was very handsome, etc.
He tells of first meeting Hitler: Hitler gives him a letter to take to Paula Wolf in Vienna.
He talks about his life as a member of Hitler's personal escort (the old term for bodyguard), and the last days in the bunker under Berlin. His duties included: bodyguard, telephone operator, courier, errand-runner.
Misch left the bunker on May 2, 1945, one of the last to leave. He was captured by the Russians and lived as a prisoner of war for almost 9 years in the Gulag system in the USSR.
He returned to Berlin after Christmas 1953, to his wife and daughter. He ran a home improvement business until he retired at age 68.
Since his wife's death, Misch has lived alone, in the same house he came home to after the war.
Misch talks about his own experiences, but his memories are so selective; he denies personal knowledge of so much of World War II, although he admits he learned a lot after the war.
There is a lot of footage of Misch on YOutube for anyone who would like to see it. His daughter Brigitta speaks English and there is footage of her as well.
I gave the book a 4 star rating simply because it was nicely put together. I would have liked to see some sort of point of view, or perspective on the subject.
Perhaps Misch has not achieved any perspective on his life yet.Der letzte Zeuge Overview
