Computational Intelligence: Eine Einführung (Informatik im Fokus) (German Edition) ReviewI found this book in a bookstore in Bern over the holidays. I sat in the bookstore reading it for several hours before buying it and then reading on the train all the way home. Kramer gives a piercingly clear view into the field of CI. His writing is precise without being verbose. He is not afraid to write down formal equations, but only when they are essential to his exposition. I am often put off by books that bury the reader with a deluge of extraneous derivations and formal commentary, and so it was a pleasant surprise to find this book was not one of them.
As for the content of the book, Kramer gives the reader a working knowledge of each of the core computational techniques of CI (Evolutionary Algorithms, Swarm Intelligence, Fuzzy Logic, and others), while simultaneously demonstrating the link between these different techniques and showing how they may be used to solve the same (or similar) problems. The descriptions of the systems are given in few words, but no essential details have been left out. He does not however give complete formal definitions or implementations of every system. This is an advantage for the creative independent reader, who will be tempted to write his own implementations.
Lastly, although the book is written in the German language, the non-native reader should not fear overmuch. Personally, I find that reading technical material in a foreign language forces one to understand more deeply than one would if reading at a faster pace in one's native language. That said, you should have your dictionary on-hand.
So, if you are in the mood for an inspiring journey into this exciting and developing field at the nexus of biology and computing, and are not afraid to brush up on your German, this book is a perfect selection.
