Bissula (German Edition) ReviewBissula is the name of a young Alaman girl. Five years earlier she spent time with a high ranking Roman official called Ausonius, who wrote the famous "Mosella", and looked up to him as a father. Now the Romans are back in Alaman territory in a pre-emptive war to secure their border while much of the army is expected to be sent to the eastern provinces against the Gothic threat.
Ausonius is back and looks for Bissula who has bloomed into a fiery 17 year old. Farm after farm is burnt as the Romans advance, but Bissula's home is spared. The Alamans are nowhere to be seen and while the Romans hunt for their elusive enemy danger awaits Bissula from unexpected quarters.
A pukka adventure story that has several different threads interwoven into a masterpiece of historic writing along with astories of desire and unrequited love. Great reading and hard to put down.
The language seems a bit old-fashioned but is easy to understand. I only noticed three archaic words: draeuen = drohen; regnicht = rainy; Walen = Romans.
