Droids Made Simple: For the Droid, Droid X, Droid 2, and Droid 2 Global (Made Simple (Apress)) ReviewI got this book after Droid X for Dummies, which I've reviewed separately. Droids Made simple is more comprehensive and lacks the wacky and distracting narrative style of the Dummies book.
For example, Droids Made Simple has a nice chapter on how to use the Swype feature for speed typing, while Droid X for Dummies makes fun of Swype and dismisses it. Droids Made Simple covers syncing with DoubleTwist in some detail; Dummies simply says you can't sync iTunes which is untrue. Droids Made Simple doesn't do a very good job on syncing with alternate calendars but it's better than Dummies which doesn't cover the topic at all.
I switched to Droid from the iPhone which is a tightly regulated environment, to say the least. I expect the Dummies book for iPhone is pretty good. But they took the same approach to writing about the Droid environment which is much more loosey-goosey. Droid apps are not tightly controlled and one of the vendors that behaves badly is Google itself; features affecting the phone are frequently changed or withdrawn for no apparent reason. Droids Made Simple deals with this flakiness as best it can by letting you know when its information is incomplete and giving you clues to find out more on your own.
Bottom line, if you're going to get just one book I would go with this one. It's hefty and a good value at Amazon's price and it will help you get the most of your new phone.Droids Made Simple: For the Droid, Droid X, Droid 2, and Droid 2 Global (Made Simple (Apress)) Overview
